CAMBODIA'S ECONOMIC GROWTH ESTIMATED AT 4.5
PERCENT IN 2002
Phnom Penh, Jan. 18 (VNA) -- Cambodia's GDP
grew by 4.5 percent last year while inflation
was kept at 3.3 percent despite severe floods
and droughts, Prime Minister Hun Sen said
at a conference on Friday.
Hun Sen attributed the growth to stable political
situation in favour of economic activities
in garment, industrial, construction and
tourism sectors.
He added that Cambodia was preparing for
WTO membership, scheduled for September 2003.
Government activities this year will focus
on reducing poverty and accelerating integration
and cooperation with neighbour countries.
Administrative reform, decentralization,
expanding exports and developing human resources
should also enjoy great attention, Hun Sen
said, adding that budget earmarked for health
care sector would rise to 300 billion riels
in 2005 from 43 billion in 1998.
Cambodia's price index was up by 3.7 percent
in 2002, according to the National Institute
of Statistics.
Highest hikes were recorded in rice price
(up 7 percent), house rental (up 9 percent),
fish and meat(up 11 percent).
However, other prices dropped, such as garment
items (down 4.7 percent), education (down
3.32 percent), and health care services (down
