エセキボ川（エセキボがわ、英語: Essequibo River, スペイン語: Rio Esequibo）は、南アメリカのガイアナを流れる川である。ガイアナ国内で最も長い川であり、オリノコ川とアマゾン川の間では最も広い川である。ブラジルとガイアナの国境にあるアラカイ山脈に水源を持ち、北方に流れ森林地帯やサバンナを横切り大西洋に注ぐ。全長は約1,000kmある。

地理
エキセボ川の流域には、数え切れないほど多くの急流や滝がある。河口は幅20kmに達し、多くの島が点在する。河口はガイアナの首都ジョージタウンから約20km離れた場所にある。

エキセボ川は、ベネズエラ方面から流れるクユニ川など多くの支流を持つ。いくつかの支流は、河口から30kmほどの場所で、いくつかの肥沃な島[1]によって分かれている。そのうちの1つであるフォート島は、この地をオランダが統治していた頃に政府があった。

ベネズエラは、エセキボ川がガイアナとの国境であり、その西側はベネズエラ領であると主張している。

エキセボは、1616年にオランダ人によって作られ後にイギリス領ギアナの一部となった植民地の名称でもある。

歴史
「エセキボ」の名前は、「炉の石」を意味するアラワク族の言葉から来ており、川原から石を持って来て炉の周りに並べるというアラワク族の習慣に由来すると説明されることが多い。ほかに人名に由来するという説もある。カプチン会の修道士であるフェリックス・マリア・デ・ベガミアン神父の著書によれば、16世紀初頭に宣教師としてこの地を旅していた[2]ホアン・エスキベル（Juan de Esquivel）の名前に由来するという。

ガイアナに最初に入植したヨーロッパ人はオランダ人であった。彼らは1615年にエクセボ川の下流に植民地を築き、先住民との友好関係を結びつつ砂糖やカカオのプランテーションを作った。

宣教師の入植は19世紀に起こったベネズエラの独立戦争の頃まで続いた。このとき、イギリスはトリニダード以外に南アメリカとの貿易のための大きな船が停泊できるような居留地を必要としていた。同時期（1833年）に、イギリスはフォークランド諸島を占領している。

1995年8月には、カナダの鉱山会社が、4,000,000m3以上のシアン化合物を川に流出し問題となった。

【2月5日 AFP】台湾は5日、南米ガイアナに圧力をかけ、台湾が代表機関に相当する事務所を設置する合意を破棄させたとして中国政府を非難し、中国政府の「邪悪な本性」が浮き彫りになったと指摘した。

　ガイアナ外務省は、台湾側が事務所の設置を発表してから1日もたたないうちに、合意の破棄を発表。中国との外交関係を維持していくと述べた。


中国関係
習近平国家主席は27日、ガイアナ共和国のアリ大統領と両国の国交樹立50周年を祝う電報を交わした。新華社が伝えた。

習主席は「国交樹立後の50年間で、中国とガイアナの関係は目覚ましい発展を遂げ、政治的相互信頼は日増しに深まり、実務協力は顕著な成果を挙げた。新型コロナウイルス感染症が発生して以来、両国民は同舟相救い、互いに見守り助け合い、両国の友情に新たな章を記した。私は中国とガイアナの関係発展を非常に重視しており、アリ大統領と共に努力して、国交樹立50周年を契機に、両国関係を絶えず新たな段階へ押し上げ、両国及び両国民に幸福をもたらすことを望んでいる」とした。

アリ大統領は「ガイアナは英語圏のカリブ海諸国の中でいち早く中国と国交を樹立し、『一つの中国』政策を揺るぎなく遂行してきた。50年間、両国は常に尊重し合い、平等かつ互恵的であり、伝統的友好関係は時間の試練に耐えてきた。ガイアナは国交樹立50周年を契機に、両国の友情を深め続けることを望んでいる」とした。（編集NA）
